Non-Portrait Portrait Project
Both were done with long exposures on a digital camera, there was no manipulation in photoshop to get the blurred movements.
Something I wish to work on would be trying to use roughly the same aperture so I could have nearly the same depth of field and to mirror the movements of the river a little better, but I took the portrait first and didn't think about it until I saw the photos side-by-side.

Chpt. 5&8 Notes
Depth Clues-
- perspective distortion: being able to manipulate something so the viewer sees an object a certain way
- moving the camera at different angles and lengths from subject create perspective distortion
Tonal Variation
- there are light and dark areas on subject
- size and position (direction, distance) of light determine tonal variations
- increasing tonal variation creates more depth to a subject, makes it less flat
Stopping flare
- nonimaging light can degrade photo
- keep lens clean
- lens hood blocks light
Fill lights
- can fill in shadows, but may create competing shadows
Single-light
- shadows on one side of the face can help place light
Broad vs short lighting
- short is when the light is on the side opposite the visible ear
- broad is when the light is on the same side as the visible ear
Can use many different light sources to help with hair, glasses or textures
Adding a background light can create a halo, or lit-up effect
Natural light is a good source, early morning or over head sun
gels and lights can determine mood, theme or feelings

This photo I took a couple of weeks ago in Mexico City, but I just edited it today and thought it was kinda funny. It's part of a ritual practice where four men are tied to the top of a pole by their legs and the rope is twisted, then a man at the top plays music as the four men spiral downwards.

Proposal 1-21-15
I'm still stuck on ideas. Like I keep changing ideas.
But one of my ideas for the non-portrait portrait project was to take a portrait of the life of a diabetic. With type 1 diabetes being a commonly misunderstood disease, I thought it would be interesting for me to show what life is like in two photographs. But, I don't want to play the illness card and not have a good photograph, which is why I need to be able to show what I need to show in just two photos.
So with this project I am hoping to show the real side of it, that it is not a disease a fat person got from eating candy or some other stereotype, but what it means on a day-to-day basis.

Practices of looking: Images, Power, Politics Reading Notes
- Treachery of Images
- Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe
- art is only representation
- "Black-boxed"
- "Photographic truth"- unmediated copy of the real world
- photographs can hold more than truth/real world
- practices of looking are intimately tied to ideology
- different portraits evoke different emotions or messages
- mug shots
- mother and child (Migrant Mother, Mary and Jesus, Madonna)
- womanhood in general (Marilyn Monroe)
"Semiotics"- use to interpret symbols to ideologies

In other news my camera is broken. So I'm sending it to Nikon. But here is a picture of a fake plant.

New Work/ Inspiration 1-11-15
Robert
and Shana ParkeHarrison are a duo photography team. They create landscapes and
surreal visions with faded colors and incomplete stories, which show the
relationship between nature, technology and human kind. Their use of scenery,
space and color are what inspire me to revisit my work from last spring; their
photos have a lot of depth and detail put into the background, while the
subjects are never fully identified and their actions are never fully clear,
always ambiguous. Gautier’s Dream is
the series I am specifically drawing from ParkeHarrison. In Gautier’s Dream, they specifically play
between the themes of life and death by creating visions of bizarre relationships
with human kind, animals, technology, and the fine line between life and the
paranormal. The movements of the subjects are always blurred, and the dynamic
between humans and animals is always otherworldly. I continue to look to
ParkeHarrison for inspiration for my works.

Old Work 1-11-15
This
photo is a part of a series I did in the spring of 2014 for my Photo 1 final. I
based my works on E.J. Bellocq and ParkeHarrison, who’s dark and surreal
photographs create a macabre scene. The photos I took were made specifically
after the Gothic theme of a lack of identity. This photo, which is just one in
the series, gives a dark, paranormal feel with the girl’s face blurred and the
forest surrounding her. What I want to revisit is the theme of a lack of
identity, specifically with the same technique of long exposure to blur
movements and faces. The reason I picked a lack of identity as a theme is due
to show changing social norms and expectations of individuals. One could read
into this theme it more to relate to gender, sexuality, race or disability,
which is something that I want to continue working on.
